L4_RISE: NDIS Frontline Leadership Training

Coaching supported decision making for frontline leaders (MLN1F_L4_decisions)

Description
Supported decision making (SDM) is an approach that enables people, particularly people with disability, to make their own decisions with the assistance of others.

It emphasises the importance of providing support, rather than having someone else make the decision. This approach values the person's preferences, rights and dignity, and helps ensure they remain in control while receiving guidance from trusted friends, family members or professionals.

The NDIS Commission is now checking whether supported decision making frameworks are reflected in actual practice on shift. It is no longer enough for your team to have completed a course. Your role is to make sure they are doing it well every day and recording the evidence.

By the end of this module, you'll be able to:

  1. Articulate your legal and organisational responsibility for your team's supported decision making practice
  2. Identify the five signals that indicate substituted decision making is becoming a team-wide pattern, not a one-off incident
  3. Coach workers through specific SDM situations, including risky choices, family override, and capacity uncertainty
  4. Have the harder conversations with families and guardians that your workers should not be managing alone
  5. Know when to escalate and to whom
